Self-Control
Roy Baumeister researches willpower, self-control and self-regulation. He coins the term ego depletion and says that our self-control weakens throughout the day as we use it (much like overused muscles do). He also tells us that people who are high in self-control are not resisting temptation more, rather that they are better at avoiding it in the first place. Positive emotion, mediation, sleep and nutritious meals can all help us to conserve our willpower. Baumeister encourages us to use our willpower to establish good habits.

These longitudinal studies tracked participants and found that those who delayed gratification had better life outcomes.
