Positive Emotions
Barbara Fredrickson argues that positive emotions expand our peripheral vision enabling us to take in the bigger picture. One of the benefits of this is that we become more creative. She also states that studies have shown we come to better win-win situations in negotiations when we have had positive emotions induced. Fredrickson claims that positive emotions literally open our minds.

The Happiness Advantage
Shawn Achor tells us that most companies and schools follow a formula for happiness that says, "if I work harder I'll be more successful, and if I'm more successful then I'll be happier." However, if we have a success we just change the goal posts. If we attain good grades we want better grades. If we get a payrise we want more. "We need to reverse the formula for happiness and success," says Achor.

The Upside Of Your Dark Side: Robert Biswas-Diener
|
Robert Biswas-Diener discusses the upside of your dark side at Happiness and Its Causes. He reminds us of the importance of sitting with discomfort rather than denying negative emotions altogether.
"I believe that it's possible that we have too much comfort. I believe that as we increasingly succeed in the pursuit of comfort, it becomes the new normal. I believe that as comfort becomes the new normal we get out of practice feeling uncomfortable and withstanding emotional discomfort, social discomfort." - Robert Biswas-Diener You can follow Robert Biswas-Diener on Twitter @biswasdiener |
The Upside Of Your Dark Side: Todd Kashdan
|
Todd Kashdan, co-author of The Upside Of Your Darkside with Robert Biswas-Diener, discusses emotions and how he believes science has oversimplified them. He argues that negative emotions have taken a bad rap, largely due to the research focusing on averages.
"If you have a preponderance of negative emotions, but you're good at being aware of them, understanding them and clarifying them, they're no longer toxic. They're just information that you can actually use just as you use Google, to actually make inroads; even better inroads sometimes than people that don't have a lot of negative emotions." - Todd Kashdan You can follow Todd Kashdan on Twitter @toddkashdan |
